Sunday Soundcheck: Set 011

Sun Feb 10, 2013, 12:33 AM
This week...

Caspian

Waking Season - 2012

Tertia - 2009

The Four Trees - 2007

You Are The Conductor - 2005

Origin Point:
United States

Sounds Like:
Post Rock, Instrumental, Ambient, Post Metal, Progressive

Caspian is an act that, since their first blistering notes on You Are The Conductor, has consistently provided a vibrant, dense, and concise post-rock aesthetic that never outstays its welcome. Now one of the mainstays of the post-rock genre, their sound has inspired countless other artists, and the sound itself has developed and matured over the course of their releases.

To listen to their music, simply click on the album covers to be taken to their respective pages.

Now, I know the discussion of music can be an emotionally charged subject for some people, but I'm not claiming that anything is better than anything else. This is no more than a soap-box for me to promote music that I enjoy; maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. That's fine.

If you've any recommendations based on this artist, or wish to promote some music that you yourself enjoy, please do so in the comments. Maybe I'll end up enjoying something enough to feature it myself.

Heh; I knew you'd find this one more agreeable than the recent blackgaze and sludge.

I recently found them amongst my "suggested artists" on Grooveshark, but haven't listened to them yet. Guess it's about time to change that. :D

Heh; I recommend it, certainly. They have a similar sort of sonic vibrancy to some of God Is An Astronaut's middle-aged work, for a direct comparison.

Sounds good, cause I'm very much into bands like God Is An Astronaut, Explosions In The Sky, Russian Circles and Mono lately. I have Caspian on my Grooveshark playlist right now. :music: :cd:

I imagine that all four of those bands will be featured in this journal at some points in the near future! Explosions In The Sky is possibly the first post-rock band I learned about, Russian Circles is one of my favourites in the genre, Mono is an under-appreciated act that I really should listen to more regularly and God Is An Astronaut has had extensive air-time over the years for me too.

I'm more likely to listen to that "genre" than to death or black metal to be honest,. To say it clearly, last week it was not my fav genre, though I'm not sure "black or death metal" is the exact term, I'm not a specialist ..; though, I liked the guitar tracks in those ;) ...

Heh, yes; many people like the sound but draw the line at the vocals. I can understand that, it's an acquired taste: there was a time when I didn't like the vocals either, but something changed along the way. Last week's artist is mostly classified as post-black metal, I believe; although genre classification is so much marsh gas most of the time!

Another fantastic Sunday Soundcheck!! I listened to two of the albums back-to-back. Thanks to you, I have discovered a new genre of music that I didn't even know existed! Loving it :)

That's great to hear; this is the precise reason for my featuring these works. I'm glad you've been able to discover an entire new genre from my journals; trust me when I say there'll be plenty more post-rock bands in future editions! There are a number further back, too; it's the one style that I listen to more than any other, although I would never pigeon-hole myself so tightly as that.

Ah, I usually avoid live releases and compilations; not entirely sure why, but my suspicion is that I would rather just go and actually see the band live; something I used to do on a weekly basis, back when I was a teenager!
