Sunday Soundcheck: Set 013

Sun Feb 24, 2013, 10:09 AM
This week...

Max Richter

Infra - 2010

24 Postcards In Full Colour - 2008

Songs From Before - 2006

The Blue Notebooks - 2004

Memoryhouse - 2002

Origin Point:
Germany

Sounds Like:
Ambient, Minimalist, Modern Classical, Electronica, Film Score

This week's edition looks at the works of an artist born in Germany, but raised in the United Kingdom; a classical writer who has performed collaborations with the likes of The Future Sound Of London and Brian Eno, amongst many others; a modern classical enigma and contradiction, in so many words. Max Richter is a composer and musician whose work, based mostly around piano, strings and subtle electronics, consistently carries a message of hopeful melancholy.

While these conceptual releases should be enjoyed in their entirety, for those wishing an immediate experience of Richter's sound I recommend the following tracks: Sarajevo, November, and Last Days from Memoryhouse, On The Nature Of Daylight and Vladimir's Blues from The Blue Notebooks, and Infra 5 from Infra.

To listen to their music, simply click on the album covers to be taken to their respective pages.

Now, I know the discussion of music can be an emotionally charged subject for some people, but I'm not claiming that anything is better than anything else. This is no more than a soap-box for me to promote music that I enjoy; maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. That's fine.

If you've any recommendations based on this artist, or wish to promote some music that you yourself enjoy, please do so in the comments. Maybe I'll end up enjoying something enough to feature it myself.

Same here, although my exposure to modern classical and similar styles is limited at best.

Darren - nice soundcheck. I've a lot of time for Max Richter, and his 'Blue Notebooks' is a particular favourite. I would presume that you have explored Jan Garbarek - if not, 'In Praise of Dreams' is my own favourite, and I would recommend it. There is also a nice album called 'Making Music' by Zakir Hussain which you may enjoy. Both on ECM. Happy listening!
